Have you ever considered donating bone marrow, admittedly the criteria for donating is very strict and you will never meet the rercipient, however you will save a life. I am seriously considering doing this for a number of reasons.
It is something I have thought about. And one of my housemates from last year spoke to her doctor about it, and it's not as simple or straightforward as giving blood. It is like a minor operation type thing, and the her doctor did say it might render you a bit delicate for 1 to 2 weeks. So I think if it is something I do end up doing at some point, it will probably be at a time in my life when I have the time to recover from it, and can afford to take some time. I think another thing to say about bone marrow donation, is that another of my former housemates tried to donate some bone marrow, and the people refused her. This is because, her blindness was due to Lebers, and had was due to a faulty gene (or genes). Therefore, she was refused because bone marrow contains stem cells, and it was thought that her stem cells may induce this faulty gene in the recipient. It's not something I know much about scientifically to comment, but it was just something she told me, so I thought I'd pass it on to the discussion. Lucy
Doc thankyou that's food for thought. I was seriously considering donating. However,as you say, with a genetic condition it may not be possible..which is not what you want to hear, when you were psyched up for going ahead.I appreciate the info as I was unsure of the criteria regarding genetic conditions.
